The Development of Okinawa Karate-Do Shorin-Ryu<\/h2>

Sensei SOKON<\/u> MATSUMURA<\/u><\/strong> <\/strong>(1809 – 1899)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/h3>
  • Founder of the Shuri-Te style.<\/li>\n\n
  • Left a scroll to one of his students, Kuwae Ryosei, in which he described the “Principles of Karate.”<\/li>\n\n
  • Studied Jigen-Ryu (a Kenjutsu style).<\/li>\n\n
  • Developed the following katas: Naihanchi, Kushanku, and Gojushiho.<\/li><\/ul>

    Sensei ANKO<\/u> ITOSU<\/u><\/strong> <\/strong>(1831 – 1915)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/h3>
    • Student of Matsumura Sokon Sensei.<\/li>\n\n
    • Modernized Karate, shaping it into its current form.<\/li>\n\n
    • Author of “The Ten Principles of Karate Practice.”<\/li>\n\n
    • Created the popular Pinan katas (around 1907).<\/li>\n\n
    • Modified Bassai and developed Passai Sho.<\/li>\n\n
    • Either created Naihanchi Ni-Dan and San-Dan or divided and expanded the original Naihanchi form into three parts.<\/li><\/ul>

      Sensei CHOSHIN<\/u> CHIBANA<\/u><\/strong> <\/strong>(1885 – 1969)<\/h3>
      • Student of Matsumura Sokon Sensei and successor to Itosu Anko Sensei.<\/li>\n\n
      • Opened a dojo in 1918 and named his style SHORIN-RYU (in 1933).<\/li>\n\n
      • Founder of the first Okinawan Karate style organization, the Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate Do Association, in 1948.<\/li>\n\n
      • Received the Kun Yon-to Zuihosho award in 1969 for his contributions to Karate.<\/li><\/ul>

        \u00a0Sensei KATSUYA<\/u> MIYAHIRA<\/u><\/strong> <\/strong>(1918 – 2010)<\/h3>
        • Successor to Chibana Choshin Sensei.<\/li>\n\n
        • Head master of the Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate Do Association.<\/li>\n\n
        • Founder and leader of the Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karatedo Shidokan Association.<\/li>\n\n
        • Held the 10th Dan rank in Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate.<\/li><\/ul>

          Sensei SHUGORO <\/u>NAKAZATO<\/u><\/strong> <\/strong>(1920 – 2016)<\/h3>
          • Student of Chibana Choshin Sensei.<\/li>\n\n
          • Founder of the Okinawa Karatedo Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan Association.<\/li>\n\n
          • Held the 10th Dan rank in Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate.<\/li><\/ul>

            Sensei HIGA YUCHOJU<\/strong><\/u> <\/strong>(1910 – 1994)<\/h3>
            • Began training with Chibana Sensei in 1948.<\/li>\n\n
            • Named his own dojo Kyudokan in 1954.<\/li>\n\n
            • Received the 9th Dan rank from Chibana Sensei in 1965.<\/li>\n\n
            • Awarded the Hanshi 10th Dan rank by the Zen Okinawa Karate-Do Federation in 1976.<\/li><\/ul>

              Sensei CHINEN KENYU<\/u> <\/strong>(1944 – 2024)<\/h3>
              • Student of Chibana Choshin, Miyahira Katsuya, Nakazato Shugoro, and Matayoshi Shinpou (Okinawa Kobudo).<\/li>\n\n
              • Pioneer of Shorin-Ryu in Europe.<\/li>\n\n
              • Founder of the World Oshukai Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate Federation (1993).<\/li>\n\n
              • Held the 10th Dan rank in Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate and the 9th Dan rank in Okinawa Kobudo.<\/li><\/ul>
